The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) provided technical guidance to schools, districts and IEP Teams to assist them in making determinations for COVID-19 compensatory education or supports to students with IEPs.
DESE described three types of supports or services a student may need to address the impact on their learning from remote learning. The supports and services include 1) recovery support, 2) COVID-19 Compensatory Services, and 3) new IEP services.
General education recovery support includes supports made available to all students who need assistance to address educational and social-emotional needs to reorient themselves to learning.
COVID-19 Compensatory Services is applicable to students with IEPs to remedy skill or knowledge loss or lack of effective progress due to delayed, interrupted, suspended, or inaccessible IEP services because of remote learning.
New IEP services to address new areas of disability-related needs for students with IEPs.
Whether you child is eligible for Covid Compensatory Services is an individualized decision based on data and information made by the IEP team, which includes the child’s parent or guardian playing an active role.
